Mourinho Has a Clear Preference Between Dumfries and Alexander-Arnold for Big Games

José Mourinho is reportedly planning to rotate Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold throughout the season, but one clear pattern has emerged: the Real Madrid boss trusts the Dutchman more when the biggest matches arrive.
José Mourinho appears to have found a way to keep both Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold involved at Real Madrid, but the competition for the right-back position is not entirely balanced.
According to Defensa Central, Mourinho intends to alternate between the two players depending on the opponent and the demands of each match. However, the Portuguese coach reportedly has greater confidence in Dumfries when Real Madrid face their toughest tests.
That preference has already been reflected in Mourinho’s team selections during the opening weeks of the season.
Dumfries has earned Mourinho’s trust
Dumfries arrived at Real Madrid this summer as a signing specifically designed to strengthen the right side of the defence and provide competition for Alexander-Arnold.
The Dutch international’s physical power, defensive strength and ability to win duels have quickly made him an important part of Mourinho’s plans.
Recent reports indicate that Dumfries has started five of Real Madrid’s first six matches, while Alexander-Arnold has had to settle for a considerably smaller role at right-back. Mourinho even used the Englishman in midfield during the Champions League meeting with Inter Milan.
The contrast between the two profiles is clear.
Alexander-Arnold offers exceptional quality on the ball, particularly with his passing and crossing, while Dumfries gives Mourinho greater physical presence and defensive security.
Why Mourinho prefers Dumfries in important games
The report suggests that this difference becomes particularly important when Real Madrid face elite opposition.
Mourinho wants his team to be physically strong and difficult to break down, especially in matches where defensive discipline and winning individual battles can have a major impact.
Dumfries fits that approach naturally.
At 1.88m tall, the Dutchman provides greater physical presence in duels and aerial situations, while his defensive intensity allows Mourinho to build a more robust structure on the right.
Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, can offer Real Madrid something completely different.
His ability to deliver dangerous crosses and switch play from deep remains one of his biggest weapons, and Mourinho has already shown that he can use the England international in alternative positions when the tactical situation requires it.
Alexander-Arnold still has an important role
Despite Dumfries’ current advantage, the report does not suggest that Alexander-Arnold has been discarded.
Mourinho reportedly wants to rotate both players rather than completely remove one from his plans. That could allow Alexander-Arnold to receive more opportunities against opponents where his passing range and creativity can be particularly useful.
The Champions League victory over Inter demonstrated precisely that flexibility. Dumfries started at right-back while Alexander-Arnold was deployed in midfield, giving Mourinho the opportunity to use both players simultaneously.
The Englishman therefore remains an important tactical option.
The big-game hierarchy is becoming clearer
What is becoming increasingly apparent, however, is that Mourinho has a preferred defensive option when maximum physical security is required.
Dumfries has started the season strongly and has established himself as Mourinho’s preferred right-back in the early stages of the campaign. Other recent reports have similarly described the Dutchman as the only Real Madrid full-back to have consistently retained the manager’s trust.
That does not mean Alexander-Arnold has lost his place permanently.
Instead, Real Madrid appear to have two very different right-back profiles at Mourinho’s disposal — one offering defensive power and physicality, the other providing elite technical quality and creativity.
The challenge for Alexander-Arnold will now be to convince Mourinho that his unique qualities can outweigh Dumfries’ physical advantages, particularly when the biggest games of the season arrive.
