Carlos Espí is quickly becoming Real Madrid’s ultimate late-game hero.
The 19-year-old has already written his name into Real Madrid history after another dramatic late winner — and his numbers are becoming impossible to ignore.
The young striker scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute against Elche, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory after the hosts had fought back from two goals down. It was his second match-winning goal beyond the 90-minute mark in Madrid’s opening six LaLiga games of the season.
And that has put Espí in a category occupied by very few players.
A remarkable record
According to statistics highlighted by MisterChip, Espí has now decided two of Real Madrid’s first six league matches with goals scored from the 90th minute onward:
- 90th minute vs Espanyol — winning goal in a 2-1 victory
- 90+1 vs Elche — winning goal in a 3-2 victory
Remarkably, he is the first Real Madrid player to achieve this feat across the club’s history during the opening six matches of a LaLiga campaign.
The only other player to score two such decisive late goals during the opening six rounds of LaLiga was Ayoze Pérez, who accomplished the feat with Villarreal in the 2024/25 season.
From substitute to difference-maker
What makes Espí’s impact even more impressive is how little time he has needed to make his mark.
Against Elche, José Mourinho introduced him late in the match, with Madrid desperately searching for a winner after surrendering their 2-0 advantage. Just moments into stoppage time, Espí was in the right place to turn Kylian Mbappé’s delivery into the winning goal.
His first league goal against Espanyol followed a similar script, with the teenager coming off the bench and scoring in the 90th minute to rescue all three points. Jude Bellingham even compared his impact from the bench to that of former Madrid hero Joselu.
Mourinho has a new weapon
Espí’s emergence is particularly interesting because he is competing for minutes in a squad containing one of the world’s biggest stars in Mbappé.
For now, the youngster is not replacing the Frenchman. Instead, he is proving that he can provide Madrid with something different when matches enter their most decisive moments.
Two late winners in six games have already given him a reputation as the player Mourinho can turn to when everything is on the line.
