The ‘Last Train’ for the French Left-Back

A general view of Real Madrid flags on display outside the stadium grounds

Real Madrid’s starting lineup for the current season appears relatively settled, with one notable exception in the midfield—a case of extreme competition rather than any question about quality. However, there is one position that has been generating doubts and discussion.

Ferland Mendy, the French left-back, finds himself on what has been described as the ‘last train.’ He has yet to make an appearance this season, sidelined once again due to injury. In his absence, the returning Fran Garcia has admirably filled the role, but it’s expected that he will continue to grow into the position. Mendy’s limited availability, coupled with prior concerns about his offensive impact, has led to growing speculation that his time at Real Madrid may be drawing to a close.

Since his €48 million move from Olympique Lyon in 2019, Mendy has endured a series of injuries, with a total of 12 to his name. Last season, he managed just over 2,000 minutes on the field, missing a staggering 23 matches. Crucially, when it came to pivotal fixtures in the Copa del Rey, Champions League, and La Liga, Carlo Ancelotti was unable to call upon Mendy.

According to Diario AS, Mendy is well aware that his market value may render him expendable, especially with increasing links between Real Madrid and Alphonso Davies. At 28 years old, Mendy has two years remaining on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, making next summer their final opportunity to secure a transfer fee for him should they decide to sell.

Mendy’s future at the club seems to hinge on a turnaround in his form and fitness. A consistent run of strong performances, coupled with maintaining his fitness, could potentially alleviate doubts and lead to a change of course from club president Florentino Perez, who has become more cautious with spending on players he doesn’t see as essential to the squad’s success.
