Kylian Mbappe’s Double Earns Real Madrid Win, But He Misses Out on Hat-Trick
On Saturday, Real Madrid secured an important victory over Villarreal, with Kylian Mbappe playing a starring role by scoring both goals for the defending champions. However, despite his impressive performance, Mbappe was left disappointed not to complete a hat-trick, which would have been his third since joining from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
Mbappe scored twice in the 17th and 23rd minutes, leaving him plenty of time to complete his hat-trick. However, it wasn’t to be, and he came close to a third in the 87th minute at La Ceramica. Arda Guler, making a rare appearance for Madrid, picked up the ball on the right side of Villarreal’s penalty area following a run from Vinicius Junior. Mbappe was visibly urging for the cutback, but Guler chose to go for goal himself. His shot flew over Diego Conde’s crossbar, much to the frustration of Mbappe.
Guler, who has had limited appearances under Carlo Ancelotti recently, especially in La Liga, seemed eager to make an impact. However, his decision to shoot instead of passing to a better-positioned Mbappe left the French star disappointed.
Despite missing out on the hat-trick, it was another successful La Liga outing for the 26-year-old. His brace took his total to 20 goals in the competition, putting him just one behind Robert Lewandowski in the race for the Pichichi Trophy, awarded to the top scorer of the season.
Whether Mbappe can claim the trophy by the end of the season remains to be seen. If he falls short by a goal, he may look back at this moment, though it would be harsh on Guler, who was simply trying to impress.
