The early setback, Valverde highlighted, “really bothered us.” He explained that “it’s not the same when Atlético is winning 1-0 and can defend well as when they have to come out and attack,” emphasizing that Madrid had given them that opportunity. The match eventually went to penalties, with Valverde commenting that “we were very tired,” and thanking his team for securing the win in the shootout.

When discussing his own penalty, Valverde described the moment as “a great relief,” admitting that, like any player about to take a penalty, his mind raced with thoughts and nerves. He knew that a miss would have resulted in significant pressure from both the fans and the staff at the Valdebebas training complex. Despite the anxiety, Valverde concluded, “Thank God we won.”
