Top Candidate to Succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid
Carlo Ancelotti’s departure from Real Madrid at the end of his contract next summer appears to be a certainty, giving President Florentino Perez and the board a full year to consider their options for his successor.
According to the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), Ancelotti has already agreed to take charge of the Brazilian national team in 2024, triggering speculation about who might fill his shoes at Real Madrid.
Zinedine Zidane, who has already managed the club twice before, is the obvious candidate, with a potential third spell not being ruled out. Raul Gonzalez, who has impressed with his work at Real Madrid Castilla, and Julian Nagelsmann, who was previously approached for the position, are also in contention.
However, according to German journalist Christian Falk, there is one name that stands out from the rest. Falk stated in an interview with Caught Offside that Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is currently the top choice.
“We believe Xabi Alonso is the number one option to replace Carlo Ancelotti in 2024. There were also ideas this summer, but he is committed to his current position. He informed Leverkusen that he won’t leave this summer because he recognizes the importance of settling in and not putting the club in a difficult situation.”
“But in 2024, there would be no excuse if Real Madrid comes calling for him. He is certainly interested, and Leverkusen is aware that there is a possibility of Real Madrid pursuing him. At the moment, he is one of the most viable solutions and has the best chance of securing the job.”
Alonso began his managerial career with Real Madrid’s under-19 side before returning to his boyhood club, Real Sociedad, where he led their B team to promotion to the second division for the first time in over 60 years. Taking over a struggling Bayer Leverkusen side, he guided them to a commendable sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Alonso’s impressive track record in management thus far has garnered praise from fans of the teams he has coached. His attractive style of play has caught the attention of many, and he is seen as a manager with the potential to make a significant impact. The Santiago Bernabeu presents a grand stage for Alonso to showcase his managerial prowess.
