Agreement reached over Rüdiger’s future!
German defender reaches verbal agreement to extend his stay until 2027, pending club elections
Antonio Rüdiger is on the verge of extending his Real Madrid contract in a move few saw coming. The German center-back has reached a verbal agreement with the club to renew for one additional year, keeping him at the Bernabéu until June 30, 2027.
The deal, first reported on Tuesday, is expected to be made official only after the club’s presidential elections—provided Florentino Pérez remains in charge. If there’s a change at the top, the incoming board will decide whether to honor the agreement already in place.
Rüdiger is fully committed to staying in Madrid, and the club believes he still has plenty to offer—especially in terms of experience and leadership. He’s seen as a valuable option in the defensive rotation, capable of pushing for a starting spot while also playing an important supporting role. A battle-hardened defender, he’s also intrigued by the possibility of working under José Mourinho, a coach he has never collaborated with before.
Eager for a Mourinho Partnership
Despite having played for clubs like Chelsea and Roma—both previously managed by Mourinho—Rüdiger never crossed paths with the Portuguese coach. Now, there’s a real chance that could finally change at Real Madrid.
Initially, Rüdiger was hoping for a two-year extension, but the club has stood firm on its policy of offering only one-year renewals to players over 30. Thibaut Courtois was a rare exception to that rule. Given Rüdiger’s injury history, Madrid are especially cautious about committing to a longer deal.
While the agreement could technically be announced immediately, the most likely scenario is that the club waits until after the elections, as the decision ties directly into long-term squad planning.

Defensive Reshuffle Underway
Real Madrid are preparing for a significant overhaul at the back. With David Alaba expected to leave and Rüdiger close to renewing, decisions still need to be made regarding Raúl Asencio’s future. Meanwhile, Dean Huijsen and Éder Militão are set to remain part of the squad.
The club’s plan is to bring in at least two new defenders, especially considering the recurring injury concerns surrounding Militão after multiple knee surgeries.
At 33, Rüdiger’s role next season will ultimately depend on the manager’s vision, but the most likely outcome is that he becomes the team’s third-choice center-back—a high-quality backup who can step in when needed. Despite receiving attractive offers from elsewhere, the German has no intention of leaving Madrid anytime soon.
