Several German Legends Don’t Want Kroos in the National Team: ‘He Should Stay in Madrid’
Toni Kroos didn’t rule out a return to international football, and since then, Germany has been in turmoil. Even several Bundesliga legends don’t want the Real Madrid midfielder to come back to Die Mannschaft amid an unprecedented crisis in the German national team: “He should stay at Real Madrid.”
The immediate future of Toni Kroos is not understood without a decision that looms on the horizon and has half of Germany crossing their fingers. The prospect of seeing the German international back in the national team, a possibility for the future that, however, brings visions of all kinds for a team where some even ask him not to join a project in crisis. Real Madrid is closely monitoring the situation.
“I had to think about it for a long time; it caught me off guard because I hadn’t even considered it myself; he did. That made me think about it and give an answer that I can’t give today,” reflected Kroos after the victory against Union Berlin in the UEFA Champions League. It’s a matter of state for a nation that, since that World Cup victory in Brazil 2014, has been accumulating setbacks and changing coaches.
It might be thought that everyone wants the return of the ‘8’, but the reality is quite different. Lothar Matthäus, the 1990 World Cup champion, stated in the last few hours: “The midfield is the department that needs it the least, as there are already players like Gundogan, Jamal Musiala, Müller, and Kimmich. There would be a lot of controversy.”
And then? “He’s not a vacuum cleaner that sweeps everything. The team needs a player who doesn’t hesitate to walk on dirty paths and engage in duels. If I were Toni Kroos, I would avoid insults and stay at home, in Madrid,” voices like those of the Euro 1996 champion Markus Babbel also comment. While some, like Uli Hoeness, see his return as positive, more than one hopes that the midfielder doesn’t join a team in a downward spiral.
Only time will tell what happens, but even Julian Nagelsmann has made it clear that the idea appeals to him. Germany is divided and will wait until the end of 2023 to know whether Toni Kroos, at 33, decides whether or not it’s the right time to return to Die Mannschaft. The crisis and the upcoming Euro 2024 could be decisive.
