Zinedine Zidane’s Potential Return to Management
Zinedine Zidane, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players in history, has also showcased his managerial prowess during his tenure with Real Madrid. His remarkable feat of guiding the club to three consecutive Champions League titles solidified his status as a top-tier coach, even if he is occasionally underrated in that regard.
Zidane’s second stint at Real Madrid, though devoid of further Champions League glory, did yield a La Liga triumph. After departing from Real Madrid following the 2020/21 season, he has been patiently awaiting the right managerial project.
Speculation regarding Zidane’s next move has linked him to both the French national team job and a potential return to Real Madrid. However, it now appears that his future may lie with Marseille, but under one crucial condition.
According to reports from FranceBleu (via The Sun), Zidane has reached an agreement with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to become the manager of Marseille, contingent on the completion of a takeover.
The PIF is actively exploring a takeover of Marseille, building on their previous success with Newcastle United. Notably, Zidane is believed to have a strong affinity for Marseille, having grown up as a supporter of the club. He has even expressed regret about never having had the opportunity to represent Marseille during his illustrious playing career.
Born in Marseille, Zidane initiated his professional career at Cannes before moving to Bordeaux. His subsequent transfer to Juventus elevated him to the status of a global football superstar. After five years with Juventus, Real Madrid acquired him in a then-world-record transfer fee of €77.5 million in 2001, marking the club where he would ultimately retire from professional football.
