Trent Alexander-Arnold Turns Down Record Salary to Join Real Madrid in Free Transfer

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the verge of completing a stunning free transfer to Real Madrid, turning down a world-record salary for a fullback to leave Liverpool after two decades at the club.

The England international has officially confirmed his departure via a statement on Liverpool’s website, marking the end of an era at Anfield. His contract is set to expire on June 30, and all signs point to a fresh start in Spain — potentially before the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in June.

Although neither Liverpool nor Real Madrid have announced the deal publicly, confirmation is expected by the end of May.

“This hasn’t been an easy decision. It’s something I’ve thought deeply about. I’ve spent 20 years here, loved every moment, and achieved everything I dreamed of,” Alexander-Arnold said in a farewell message, quoted by EOTK.

“I’ve given everything, day in and day out, but I now feel I need a change — a new challenge for myself as a player and as a person. I believe now is the right time.”

Rejected Mega Offer from Liverpool

According to ESPN, Alexander-Arnold rejected a final offer from Liverpool that would have made him one of the highest-paid fullbacks in world football.

Talks over a new contract began during the final weeks of Jurgen Klopp’s reign and extended into Arne Slot’s early days as manager. Despite Liverpool winning the Premier League under Slot’s leadership, the 26-year-old had already made up his mind.

He is expected to sign a five-year deal with Real Madrid, with wages reportedly similar to Liverpool’s final offer, but his main motivation was not money — it was personal and professional growth.
