Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti Reach Exit Agreement Ahead of Managerial Change

Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid and manager Carlo Ancelotti have reached an agreement for the Italian to leave the club at the end of the season, finalizing what many had already suspected for months. Ancelotti’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu will come to a close following the conclusion of the La Liga campaign in late May.

According to The Athletic, a verbal agreement is now in place, and the official announcement could come as soon as next week, potentially after Sunday’s El Clásico. The final fixture of the season will be at home against Real Sociedad on May 24 or 25, depending on the league schedule.

A Legendary Run Comes to an End

Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in 2021 for his second stint, replacing Zinedine Zidane. During this time, he solidified his legacy by winning two UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga championships, becoming the most decorated manager in the club’s history in terms of trophies.

His calm leadership and tactical flexibility have been key to Real Madrid’s domestic and European success over the last four years.

Next Stop: Brazil

The 64-year-old is expected to take over the Brazilian national team once his Real Madrid exit is official. Talks between Ancelotti and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) have been ongoing, and terms have already been agreed. Ancelotti prioritized resolving his future with Real Madrid before signing with Brazil.

He is expected to be in charge for Brazil’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in early June.

Who Will Replace Ancelotti?

Real Madrid have long been linked with Xabi Alonso, who is currently enjoying great success at Bayer Leverkusen, having led them to their first unbeaten Bundesliga title. While Alonso is the preferred long-term candidate, it remains uncertain whether he will join before the FIFA Club World Cup (June 18 – mid-July) or afterward.

If Alonso is unavailable to take charge immediately, Director of Football Santiago Solari is the most likely interim option. Solari, a former Real Madrid player and coach, could temporarily step in until Alonso officially assumes control.
