Manchester United’s Raphael Varane Open to Real Madrid Return Amid Uncertain Future
Manchester United’s Raphael Varane, who was signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, has expressed openness to a potential return to the Spanish club. Varane’s time at Manchester United has been marked by fluctuations in form, and he has found himself frequently on the bench, with Jonny Evans seemingly moving ahead of him in the pecking order.
In an interview earlier this year with the French edition of GQ Magazine, Varane stated, “I will finish my career either in Madrid, or in Manchester, or in Lens. I will not move to another club [other than those].” Despite recognizing the complexity of a return to Real Madrid, Varane remains open to the idea.
However, Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, explained the recent absence of Varane from the starting lineup, citing tactical reasons and the strong performances of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans. While acknowledging that Varane and Maguire have proven they can play together, ten Hag highlighted the need for fluidity in build-up play, which can be challenging when one of them plays from the left center-back position.
Varane, a proven winner at various levels, may find it challenging to accept a role on the bench, especially given his high standards. If the situation does not improve soon, the possibility of Varane leaving Manchester United becomes more realistic. However, a return to Real Madrid may not be likely at the moment, as the club has tended to target younger players in recent times, unless they are available as free agents. Varane, at 30 years old, does not fit this profile.
