Luka Modric Expresses Frustration Over Limited Playing Time at Real Madrid
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has openly acknowledged his dissatisfaction with being a benchwarmer for the club, expressing that it wasn’t what he anticipated.
Despite extending his contract for an additional season this summer and rejecting a substantial offer from Saudi Arabia, the 38-year-old Croatian has found himself with limited opportunities this season. In the first four games, he has started only once, accumulating a total of 133 minutes across all appearances. Modric shared his thoughts with Sportske Novosti (via Marca), highlighting his unfamiliarity with the situation.
“No one is happy when they don’t play. After my entire career, starting is what I’m used to, so this feeling is especially strange to me. However, the coach has made his decisions, and I won’t let it affect my commitment; quite the opposite.”
“They wanted me to stay, and I had the same desire. My only condition for staying was that they treat me as a competitive player, not merely as a squad member based on past accomplishments. They assured me that my status wouldn’t change, and that’s why I signed.”
Known for his intense work ethic and his nickname ‘vinegar,’ Modric is determined to make an impact and challenge Carlo Ancelotti’s choices.
“I am aware that there is intense competition in the midfield, with these young players being top-level talents, which is why they are at Real Madrid. We older players must assist in their development and gradually transition into new roles. What is clear to me is that I will work to be a key player this season.”
Modric recognizes the formidable midfield competition at Real Madrid, with players like Dani Ceballos and Arda Guler seeking opportunities. Fellow veteran Toni Kroos also contends for a spot in the lineup alongside the likes of Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurelien Tchouameni. Jude Bellingham has established himself as the de facto number 10.
As Modric strives to maintain his position in one of the world’s most talented midfield rosters, he remains committed to his goal of contributing to Real Madrid’s success.
