Kylian Mbappé Faces Surgery Debate Over Knee Injury at Real Madrid

Club doctors recommend an operation, but the French star prefers a conservative treatment to avoid a long absence

Kylian Mbappé’s knee situation has taken a new turn. Real Madrid’s medical staff have reportedly suggested that the forward undergo surgery on his left knee to ensure a full recovery, although the player is currently hoping to avoid the operation.

Mbappé has spent the past few days in Paris receiving treatment aimed at relieving the pain and discomfort he has been experiencing. Despite criticism for not staying in Madrid during his recovery, the trip was fully authorized by both the club and head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

French journalist Fabrice Hawkins from RMC Sport reported that the club initially wanted Mbappé to undergo surgery. However, the player declined the proposal for now. Additional medical tests are expected in the coming days to determine whether he could return in time for the second leg against Manchester City.

Mbappé prefers a conservative recovery plan

The French star believes that with the help of physiotherapists he may recover without needing surgery. From his perspective, going under the knife would significantly extend his time away from the pitch and potentially slow down his momentum.

However, choosing a conservative treatment approach also carries risks. If the injury is not properly managed, the condition could worsen, which is why Real Madrid’s medical staff are closely monitoring his progress.

Possible return for the Etihad clash

At this stage, nothing is certain. Mbappé has already been ruled out of the first leg between Real Madrid and Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Nevertheless, there is still hope he could feature in the return match at the Etihad Stadium.

A similar situation applies to Jude Bellingham, who is also racing against time to be available for the second leg.

Inside the club, the priority remains clear: avoid unnecessary risks. With a long and demanding season ahead, rushing players back from injury could lead to more serious problems.

Players eager to return despite criticism

Both Mbappé and other injured players are reportedly determined to return as soon as possible and help the team in crucial matches like the clash against Manchester City.

The players are also aware of criticism circulating on social media suggesting some are avoiding games to protect themselves ahead of international tournaments. According to those close to the squad, that narrative is far from reality — the players simply want to recover properly so they can perform at their best for Real Madrid. ⚽
