Courtois Reveals What Zidane Told Him About Keylor Navas

Thibaut Courtois is the central figure in a new Prime Video documentary, where the Real Madrid goalkeeper opens up about his professional career, including some of the most controversial moments he has experienced.
One of the most intriguing revelations is Courtois’ initial belief that he would struggle to earn Zidane’s trust at Real Madrid, thinking that the French coach preferred Keylor Navas. However, the Belgian quickly realized he was wrong and went on to establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

What Did Zidane Say to Courtois?
“Zidane spoke to me. I felt like we didn’t have a good relationship, and I told him that I had the impression he didn’t want me. But he told me that wasn’t true—he trusted me and said I would be his goalkeeper,” Courtois recalled.
At the time, replacing Keylor Navas was a significant challenge. The Costa Rican had won three consecutive Champions League titles, and he was understandably not thrilled about Courtois’ arrival. “Keylor had won three Champions League trophies, and when I arrived, he felt like I was invading his space,” the Belgian explained.
His Relationship with Atlético Madrid Fans
Another topic Courtois addresses in the documentary is his complicated relationship with Atlético Madrid fans, given his past with the club. His move to Real Madrid sparked controversy, and he admits that some Atlético supporters took things too far.

“They threw stuffed rats at me, vandalized my commemorative plaque, and even used blood. I can understand the rivalry, but they crossed the line,” Courtois said.
In his most recent visit to Atlético Madrid’s stadium, objects were thrown at him once again, causing a temporary halt to the match. However, the game was able to continue without further incident.
