Chelsea Player Confirms His Desire for a Future with Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s summer strategy underwent a significant shift due to unexpected injuries, prompting a surprising move for Kepa Arrizabalaga. It’s unlikely they would have pursued him had it not been for Thibaut Courtois’ torn ACL before the season began, with doubts about the Belgian’s return this season.
Real Madrid acted swiftly, securing Kepa on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Although Kepa has been with the Blues since 2018, he has struggled to fulfill the early promise he displayed at Athletic Bilbao.
Kepa has swiftly assumed the role of the starting goalkeeper at Real Madrid, while Andriy Lunin remains a backup option for now.
Interestingly, Kepa seems eager to extend his stay at Real Madrid beyond the one-year loan and appears less committed to the Chelsea project. In a statement to COPE, he expressed his desire:
“My intention is to stay for more than a year. I felt it was time for a change of scenery. I wanted to stay. But it only took a couple of calls because when Real Madrid call, it is different. I felt the Chelsea project was not the right one.”
While Kepa’s performance at Real Madrid this season remains uncertain, his time at Chelsea was unremarkable. He possesses quick reflexes, is adept at saving penalties, and is competent with the ball at his feet. However, he lacks a commanding presence in the box and struggles with crosses and long-distance shots, vulnerabilities that Premier League opponents exploited.
La Liga could better suit Kepa’s strengths, and he might surprise with his performances once he settles in at Real Madrid. Nonetheless, it’s challenging to envision the club making a permanent signing, especially with Courtois expected to return to full fitness next season.
