Bayern Munich’s Choice for Tuchel’s Successor: Not Zidane
The Coach Bayern Munich, Real Madrid’s Rival, Has Picked to Replace Tuchel: It’s Not Zidane. Lothar Matthäus, a Bavarian Club Legend, Weighs in on Team’s Future
The erratic season of the Germans has led the club to part ways with their coach for the upcoming season. Nagelsmann was the top target, but he opted to renew his contract with the German National Team. Now, Zidane’s name has faded away, replaced by Emery’s.
Real Madrid faces a significant challenge in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. Despite the Germans losing the Bundesliga, clinched by Bayern Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, Bayern has always been a formidable opponent for the Whites, historically eliminating them frequently. Fortunately, the tide has turned in recent encounters, favoring Madrid.
The current turbulent season under Thomas Tuchel’s management is bound to have consequences, and Munich is well aware. Lothar Matthäus, a former player of the Bavarian side, has spoken out, particularly analyzing the technical aspect, given that it’s now official that Tuchel won’t continue in the Allianz Arena dugout next season.
“I can understand Julián Nagelsmann’s decision – the German, who has previously managed Bayern, reportedly turned down an offer to return – and, of course, it’s another setback for Bayern after Xabi Alonso’s ‘no’,” hinted the former midfielder during a program on Sky Sports, where he serves as a TV commentator.
Matthäus didn’t hesitate in suggesting Tuchel’s replacement for Bayern. “I would bring in Unai Emery from Aston Villa. He’s doing a great job there. He has extensive international experience and has won titles with Sevilla, for example.” The German further noted that the Spanish coach can learn German, although English – a language already mastered by the former Sevilla coach – would suffice. “Emery would also bring a breath of fresh air; he would be a new face in the Bundesliga, which would fit well with Bayern Munich,” concluded the former player, who accumulated twelve seasons with the Bavarian shirt in two separate stints.
Bayern Munich eagerly seeks a replacement for Tuchel, whose contract expires in 2025. However, the club announced last February that they had reached an agreement to terminate the contract due to the team’s poor results. Since then, Nagelsmann was the top target, but the German chose to renew with the national team. Now, the list being considered at the Allianz Arena offices includes De Zerbi, Sebastian Hoeness, Peter Bozs, Arne Slot, Demichelis… and Emery.
