Ancelotti Speaks About Who Will Play in the Copa del Rey Final

The Real Madrid manager addressed the Copa del Rey final following the win over Athletic Club
Real Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Athletic Club thanks to a stunning last-minute goal from Fede Valverde in the 92nd minute. The win earned three crucial points and keeps Real Madrid in the La Liga title race.
After the match, Carlo Ancelotti spoke about everything that happened on the pitch. The Italian coach was also asked about the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, set to take place next Saturday, April 26 at La Cartuja in Seville.

ANCELOTTI ON THE REFEREES
What do you think of the refereeing?
“I think this is modern football now. The disallowed goal for Vini is clear under the current rules—it’s almost automatic. VAR didn’t call the penalty on Bellingham. That’s the new football, the modern one.”
On Fede Valverde’s Performance
“He was key because he scored the goal. The team did well, although we were a bit slower in the first half. In the second, we improved in all aspects. We wanted to react after the Champions League elimination. The team delivered, and Fede was crucial.”
Improvement in the Second Half
“In the first half, we controlled the game. With more midfielders, we had more possession and didn’t suffer from Athletic’s pressing. But we lacked creativity between the lines, so we didn’t generate much danger. The team played well overall—aggressive, solid, didn’t concede. Let’s hope we keep improving.”

On Vinícius’ Form
“He’s an extraordinary player. His attitude is fantastic. He kept trying, scored a goal, delivered great passes… As always, he was decisive.”
THE PLAN FOR THE COPA DEL REY FINAL
Tactical plan for Saturday’s final:
“I picked this lineup today to have more control, with Luka and Ceballos. They did well for 70 minutes. We needed to win, and then we brought on Endrick. We still have time to prepare for the Copa final.”
Preferred system:
“My favorite is the 4-4-2. I’m attached to it because, defensively, it’s the best system.”
Why use a 4-3-3 then?
“It doesn’t mean I need four traditional midfielders. I’ve often used Vinícius and Rodrygo as midfielders. You can play a 4-4-2 with six midfielders—two can play as forwards. Our wingers can also slot into the midfield line. It really depends on the opposing full-backs.”
On Bellingham’s Performance
“That’s the position that gave us a big edge last season. He did really well in the second half. We attacked from the wings, sent in crosses, and he was ready. He deserved a goal.”
Courtois or Lunin in the Copa Final?
“Lunin or Courtois. I wouldn’t rule out Fran González either.”
