Ancelotti Pleased with New Formation Despite Acknowledging Weakness
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed overall satisfaction with his team’s performance against Milan, as they tested a new formation during their preseason friendly. While positive about the 4-4-2 diamond midfield setup, Ancelotti did acknowledge a weakness that needs addressing.
In the match, Ancelotti deployed Jude Bellingham in the number 10 role, alongside Brahim Diaz and Joselu Mato as the strike partnership. The second half saw Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes coming on in the attacking positions, with 18-year-old Nico Paz replacing Bellingham after 64 minutes.
Speaking to Diario AS in the post-match press conference, Ancelotti praised the new system but acknowledged the need for some adjustments.
“I liked it. There are things that we have to modify a bit. It was a bit difficult for us to start from behind. We tried to play a little more inside than out wide. Bellingham’s position was good, and he played a good game. The team must get used to his quality. We have to enjoy his ability to arrive in the box during the season. I liked the system. Sometimes the pressure was not correct, but my feeling is good.”
When asked about the possibility of pressing higher in the upcoming season, Ancelotti emphasized the challenge of finding the right balance.
“We have to try to push a little higher. With the diamond in midfield, we have a lot of central pressure and less lateral pressure. You have to swing better and press with the full-backs. In terms of defense, it is not the best system, but I have to adapt to the characteristics of the players.”
Ancelotti’s return to Real Madrid has seen him strive to incorporate a more proactive pressing style. While last season showed progress in this area, challenges remain, particularly against top-level opponents. With a potentially more athletic Real Madrid squad this season, Ancelotti aims to achieve a better pressing game but acknowledges that adapting to the new formation may take time.
As the preseason unfolds, Ancelotti will continue to fine-tune his tactics to maximize the team’s potential and address any weaknesses in the new system.
