Modrić Jokes About Mourinho’s Return: “Don’t Call Me Back!”
The Croatian legend reacts to Mourinho’s comeback at Real Madrid while hinting his career is nearing its final chapter
Luka Modrić couldn’t help but smile when asked about José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid. The Croatian midfielder, now 40, joked that he hopes his former coach doesn’t pick up the phone to bring him back to the Spanish capital.
Speaking to Onda Cero after Croatia secured qualification for the World Cup knockout stage, Modrić responded with humor and warmth: “No, no… don’t call me! I wish him the best as always. He’s one of the best, a great coach, and I have a special affection for him.”
Mourinho was the man who brought Modrić to Real Madrid from Tottenham, a move that initially raised doubts but ultimately proved to be one of the most successful signings in the club’s history.
Approaching the End
While still performing at a high level, Modrić openly admitted that the end of his playing career is getting closer. The veteran midfielder is currently focused on enjoying every moment, aware that time is catching up with him.
“It’s incredible how people treat me. I’m trying to enjoy everything—every training session and every match—because I know I’m at an age where the end is getting closer,” he said.
Despite the pressure that comes with representing Croatia—especially after their strong performances in recent World Cups—Modrić remains determined to compete at the highest level.
“There’s always pressure because of what we’ve achieved. People expect a lot from us, maybe even more than is realistic. But we keep fighting, giving everything, and that’s what defines us.”
Eyes on the Next Round
Croatia’s progression to the knockout stage was a key objective, and Modrić believes the team is growing stronger with each game.
“It was important to get through the group, our first goal. We’ve done it and we’re very happy. I think this was our best performance so far, and I hope we’ll be even better in the next round.”
Known for their resilience, Modrić emphasized that Croatia’s fighting spirit remains their biggest strength: “We’re used to battling until the end. If we do that, with the quality we have, the reward always comes.”
A Future Back at Real Madrid?
Looking ahead, there has already been speculation about Modrić returning to Real Madrid in a different role once he retires. Given his legendary status at the club, a position within the institution would not be surprising.
For now, however, Modrić is fully focused on finishing his playing career on a high—while sharing a laugh about a call from Mourinho that, as he insists, won’t be coming.
