Lawyer Javier Zambrano outlines the legal, geographic, and institutional barriers to a potential move

Rumors have periodically surfaced that Real Madrid could consider leaving LaLiga to escape controversies surrounding Spanish refereeing. While the idea may appeal to many fans, turning it into reality would be extraordinarily difficult.

According to lawyer Javier Zambrano, any such move would require approval from both UEFA and FIFA—making the prospect highly unlikely.

Could Real Madrid leave LaLiga?

The first legal question is whether LaLiga itself could block the club’s departure. Some observers have wondered whether the competition’s leadership—headed by Javier Tebas—has the authority to prevent it.

Zambrano argues that, under Spain’s constitutional right to freedom of association (Article 22), Real Madrid could theoretically withdraw unilaterally from LaLiga. He adds that the club could also sever ties with the Real Federación Española de Fútbol simply by renouncing its federation license.

In legal terms, leaving Spanish domestic structures is possible—at least on paper.

Would the Premier League accept a Spanish club?

The next hurdle would be England. Premier League regulations state that participating clubs must be based in England and officially recognized by The Football Association.

Zambrano notes that this is not just a geographic issue. The league expects clubs to have deep roots and a permanent physical presence in the country. A Madrid-based institution would struggle to meet those criteria, presenting a major obstacle from the outset.

UEFA and FIFA approval would be decisive

Even if the Premier League were willing to change its rules, the final decision would rest with international governing bodies.

Zambrano stresses that Real Madrid could not formalize any agreement with the English FA without prior authorization from UEFA. In addition, FIFA statutes would also require explicit approval for such an unprecedented cross-border league move.

A highly improbable scenario

While the idea of Real Madrid competing in England’s top flight captures the imagination, the legal, regulatory, and logistical barriers are immense. Without green lights from domestic authorities, the Premier League, UEFA, and FIFA alike, the Spanish giants joining England’s top division remains little more than speculation.
