How the Real Madrid dressing room reacted to Barcelona’s humiliation at Stamford Bridge

Barcelona suffered a brutal defeat yesterday against Chelsea. Despite the cliché that Barça usually has good memories of Stamford Bridge, this certainly won’t be one of them.

An own goal by Koundé, followed by strikes from Willian and Delap, sealed the three goals conceded by Joan García.

Real Madrid Were Very Attentive to the Match

While Real Madrid’s players were finishing dinner at their hotel, they watched Chelsea rack up goal after goal against Barcelona — a complete domination by the English side.

What the Madrid squad commented on most was “the pace” of the match, insisting that if Chelsea had “pressed harder,” they could have produced a “historic thrashing.”

And they weren’t wrong. Even so, a 3–0 defeat is already a very heavy result and yet another embarrassing European night for Hansi Flick’s Barça.

Now It’s Real Madrid’s Turn to Do Their Job

Tonight at 21:00 (Spain time), Xabi Alonso’s side will need to secure three points in Greece against José Luis Mendilibar’s Olympiacos.

Yesterday, Xabi Alonso said this about the upcoming Champions League clash:

“We need a good performance, and after these last matches, we want to rediscover the feeling of victory. For that, we need to play well, with focus, and understanding the importance of the match for qualification. Even though we already have 9 points, we want more. After the Liverpool game and the two in La Liga, we want another positive result tomorrow.”

He also spoke about the Greek team:

“I’ve followed Olympiacos not only because we knew we would face them in the Champions League, but also because I have great personal appreciation for Mendilibar and Darko Kovacevic. I know what they achieved in the Conference League and what they did last season. Mendilibar is a great coach and someone who proposes very intense football. He’s achieved that at Olympiacos and is getting the recognition he also received at Eibar and other clubs. I’m very happy for him.”

Álvaro Carreras also addressed the media in the build-up to the match, speaking about what it means for any team to face Real Madrid in Europe:

“No team likes playing against Real Madrid. It’s difficult. It’s a club with a lot of history and a huge name. I never had the privilege — or the misfortune — of playing against Real Madrid. But we go to every stadium with the hunger to win, with character, pushing forward, and aiming to earn the three points, which is the most important thing.”
