Xabi Alonso Bets on Rodrygo’s Future at Real Madrid
The Spanish coach sees the Brazilian as a key player despite his changing role and plans to keep giving him opportunities.
Real Madrid is still feeling the effects of last weekend’s draw against Rayo Vallecano, though head coach Xabi Alonso urged calm in his post-match press conference.
“It was one of those matches that’s hard to bring to your own terms. Anything could’ve happened in the second half. I don’t blame it on emotional swings — we want to stay stable in our preparation and mindset because we know La Liga is about taking it game by game. We couldn’t win today. What matters is that we keep growing, improving, and engaging in positive self-criticism. This is Real Madrid, and everyone knows what that means. It’s only November — there’s a long way to go. We must stay demanding but also balanced,” Alonso told reporters.
These words reflect the Basque manager’s composure and confidence. He’s aware that his team has performed well early in the season, though he knows certain aspects need refinement to raise their level.
Rodrygo Remains Key
One of those areas of focus involves Rodrygo Goes, whose role in the squad has evolved — but who remains essential in Alonso’s plans.

The Madrid coach views the Brazilian as his best impact substitute and intends to keep giving him minutes, even if it means reducing playing time for young forwards like Endrick or Gonzalo. Alonso believes that if he can “recover” Rodrygo’s form and confidence, the forward could become a game-changing asset — almost like a new signing. His talent is unquestionable, but greater consistency is required.
Interestingly, Alonso has adjusted his tactical view of Rodrygo’s positioning. At the start of the season, he often placed him on the left wing, but in recent matches — notably against Liverpool and Rayo Vallecano — he’s deployed him on the right flank.
“It’s an option,” Alonso explained when asked about Rodrygo’s ideal role. “He can play on either wing. In fact, he’s done it many times — he can even play through the middle. It’s a possibility we have.”
With Alonso’s trust and tactical flexibility, Rodrygo’s future at Real Madrid remains promising — but it’s also a crucial test for the young Brazilian to rediscover his best version and reclaim a decisive role in the team.
