Konaté clears up the doubt about his signing for Real Madrid after winning the match

Ibrahima Konaté

The French defender impresses against Los Blancos and strengthens his case for a potential move to the Bernabéu.

Ibrahima Konaté delivered one of his finest performances of the season in Liverpool’s 1–0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield, reigniting speculation about his possible transfer to the Spanish giants.

The French center-back has long been on Real Madrid’s radar, with the club considering signing him as a free agent in January. His contract with Liverpool expires on June 30, and he has so far turned down multiple renewal offers from the English club. Konaté has even hinted in interviews that he would be open to joining what he called “the best club in the world.”

Against Madrid, Konaté was rock-solid — powerful in duels, precise in positioning, and virtually unbeatable in his area. His commanding display left some within Real Madrid convinced that he is ready for the challenge of playing in white. The final decision, however, rests with club president Florentino Pérez, who will determine whether to move forward with the signing.

Because Konaté will soon be a free agent, negotiations would be simpler and more affordable. The player is reportedly eager to take the next step in his career and compete for a starting role at the Santiago Bernabéu, alongside young defenders like Huijsen. Performances like the one at Anfield have only strengthened his case.

Liverpool’s Position

Liverpool, however, has no intention of giving up easily. Much like their efforts to renew Trent Alexander-Arnold last season, the club plans to push hard to extend Konaté’s contract during the current campaign. The Reds see him as a key part of their defensive core and are unwilling to sell him in the winter window.

Still, they are aware that if Real Madrid makes a formal approach, convincing the player to stay could become an uphill battle. In just two months, Konaté will be free to negotiate directly with any club and agree to a deal for next season.

For now, Real Madrid is keeping its stance calm and noncommittal — not confirming or denying interest in the Frenchman. The club maintains that it is monitoring several potential targets and that it’s still too early to make definitive transfer moves.
