Nico Williams Nears Contract Extension with Athletic Club, Dashing Real Madrid and Barcelona’s Hopes
Athletic Club is on the verge of securing a contract extension for Nico Williams, marking a significant boost for the Basque club.
At just 21 years old, Williams has become a consistent presence in the Spain national team for over a year and is regarded as one of their most promising talents. However, his current contract is set to expire next summer. According to Sport, Los Leones are close to finalizing a new deal and aim to have it signed before the end of 2023.
This development may come as a disappointment to Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are reportedly considering withdrawing their interest, believing it may be an uphill battle. On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, and Brighton and Hove Albion have also expressed strong interest in Williams.
Reportedly, the new contract will include an affordable release clause, providing Williams with an option to leave Bilbao if he chooses to. The intention is for both the player and the club to benefit from a potential transfer.
While the Clasico duo may be reconsidering their pursuit of Williams, other clubs seem undeterred. Real Madrid and Barcelona might have been attracted to the prospect of signing Williams at a lower cost, but his potential role as a non-starter may be a factor in their hesitance. On the other hand, Brighton, Villa, and PSG are less likely to be deterred by the presence of an “affordable release clause.”
